The idea of welcoming new hobbies into one’s life is thrilling. The other day, I saw an interview with an 80+ yr old woman who had taken up ballet in her 70s. She went en pointe at 76 (if I have that right)! Can you imagine? Still finding new hobbies at that age? So inspiring. Makes me think I should take up dance again!
I love gardening and making flower displays from my flowers. I used to be really good at sketching in school and have left it fall away. My biggest hobby is reading and writing reviews at moment. I read a good article yesterday on Anne Boyd's Substack about using the right brain more, which is the creative side, to alleviate anxiety from the left brain.
That sounds like an interesting article. I definitely get to a point where I crave creative tasks after long periods of more technical work. Gardening and flower displays are wonderful hobbies. I love gardening too (should have added that to the list!)
The lemon painting is so on trend 🍋I recently dusted off my sewing machine & went on a swim costume sewing costume & chose a lemon print. Also been making lots of scrunchies for friends. Agree it’s a good bit of mindfulness as you can’t think about anything or scroll your phone!
Love the idea of making scrunchies! I feel like I could probably manage that on my sewing machine, but you might just have added another hobby for me Becky!
I’ve got back into (very simple) cross stitch again recently and have another project to get into when I have time (maybe will take it with my on an upcoming holiday). 🥂 to all the hobbies!
I'm also one of those who loves to explore new hobbies regularly. For example, about a year ago I suddenly felt the need to paint with watercolours. No idea why, as I had never been any good with painting or sketching or anything like this. And only last week I discovered the creation of paper flowers. I just saw a video on YouTube and I thought that these might complement my ceramic pieces. So I had to try it and yes, I love it. Not sure for how long though but I still think that they will go well with my handmade vases so I might continue with it. However, what I'm really grateful for is my main hobby which is making pottery. This is really my passion. I can lose myself in it. Totally. Completely. And the thing is, that even if I've been making pottery for many years as a hobby, I only realised last autumn that it was really my passion. Since then, I'm kind of more 'immune' to exploring tons of other things. I'm sure that other ideas will come my way and I'll explore some of the options of course, but it doesn't really matter, does it? As long as one finds something (or many things) where the mind can rest, it's all for a good cause.
I love exploring new hobbies, like you I don't aim to become professional with it and my curiosity directs me to see if I want go back and keep playing with it. When you connect with a hobby and get focussed in on the task at hand it feels like a lovely massage for the brain.
I want a hobby! I’ve stopped drinking (mostly) and it’s actually weird how much time it’s created (mainly the lack of hangovers tbh…). I tell myself I’m uninspired because of where I live (a Victorian terraced in SE London) but I think I’m making excuses aren’t I…
Is there something you enjoyed as a child/teen that you might like to try again? The interior designer in me thinks that there much be some inspiration in your Victorian terrace. I love this period of houses 🤓
Absolutely - finding the thing or things that allow our minds to rest is the most important thing. And it’s even more lovely when you realise one of your hobbies is actually a passion that you can’t live without. I’m so happy you found pottery!
Power to the hobby whores! lol. Love all this.
Absolutely power to the hobby whores! 💪🏻🧶

Long live hobbies! (Especially cross stitch, but I might be a little biased there 😉).

Erm…I now crochet every week and have just joined a flamenco dance class 🤣
Love this! 💃🏻 🧶 can the two be combined?!
I can crochet a flamenco skirt?

That’s a great way of putting it. I also like the idea of our curiosity directing us.
