Hello!

We are fast approaching Christmas and it’s a time of year that can evoke mixed feelings. We’re sold an image that it should be a happy, indulgent (at least until 26th December), sparkly affair. In reality, it often isn’t like that. Or anywhere near.

Over the past week or so, I’ve read several beautifully written and poignant posts from other Substackers about their feelings on Christmas and have been reminded once again that we never quite know what is going on with other people and we should never judge.

I have mixed feelings about Christmas.

I dislike the arbitrary nature of all of the things you are ‘supposed’ to do. I dislike the decisions about who to spend Christmas Day with, always feeling like someone will be disappointed. I am really not a fan of what I call ‘organised fun’ and prefer instead to do things spontaneously, when it feels right. I love buying and giving gifts, but prefer to give them at any time of the year when I’ve seen something that someone I love would like.

This year, we will spend Christmas Eve at home and then, in the space of around 48 hours, go on a mini-tour of England seeing everyone in our close families. It will be busy but we will be able to see our parents and siblings and nieces and nephews. And then return home to a calm house, open the good wine, cook whatever we want to eat, nap when we feel like it and… chill.

In advance of that whirlwind 48 hours, we’ve come to France for a quiet week.

For today’s post, I’ve recorded a 12-minute video. It begins as a follow up to the piece I wrote on Wednesday reflecting on a year of change.

I chat about three small things which spark joy for me at the moment (not Christmas related!), as well as my holiday reading pile.

It feels very personal to be talking on camera, so the video is accessible only to paid subscribers. Come and join the community - you won’t be disappointed!
